Salt Painting

Let’s do some salt painting today. You’ll need lots of salt, glue and some food colouring. Bare in mind though that this artwork won’t last so be prepared to explain to your kid that he can’t keep this in his gallery 🙂

Salt painting

First, I let him spread glue all over black construction paper.

Place the construction paper in a shallow container and pour salt onto the glue.

Dip a brush into food colouring and slightly touch the tip of the brush on the salt.

Pay attention to the salt. It will suck absorb the food colouring and kids are usually fascinated by it!

Next I spread glue onto a black construction paper. I spelled out his name 🙂 He poured salt all over it 😀

It’s ‘magic’. Kids will be amazed I assure you 😀

Ethan and his masterpiece 🙂 Too bad it will get runny almost immediately though 🙁

  1. Hi Merryn!
Like I said to your friend: Your work it’s amazing and the world need to see it and learning from it. 🙂
About the salt, when I was in college we use it with watercolor, the salt makes the colors be more blurring, but a nice blurring… 🙂

      Hi Doreen,

It will be fun for sure 🙂

  4. Looks fun! Wanna try it too… must go buy some cheap salt first hehe. You used fine salt, right? Will coarse salt make it last a little longer or the effect (colour spreading) won’t be the same?

    • Merryn

      ChloeMummy,

Salt and moisture just can’t work together. The moist from the food colouring or watercolour will just ‘melt’ the salt no matter how coarse or fine they are… But before they do, the kid will have loads of fun 😀

      Shenny’s Mommy,

      We used fine salt 😀

  5. Glad to know! You put the salt (coarse salt) after the paint, when its still wet. When the paint dries, you take the salt by hand. Sorry my english it’s a little limited, hope you have understood the explanation 😀

You can do this same thing with gelatin and it smells wonderful! The colors are very vibrant!
